Since 2020, short-form videos have seen a much higher growth rate, attributed to the rise of platforms such as TikTok, resulting in shifts in viewer behavior. This has had a knock-on effect, with viral videos on such platforms causing attached soundtracks to rise in popularity. Artists and musicians are increasingly accepting that having their soundtracks on popular TikTok or YouTube Shorts videos is a strategy that needs to be considered, to the point where various record labels have allocated budgets to promote songs through short-form videos.
