Meet Tatum Kembara, CEO of DDI & Managing Director of D2C and E-commerce Enablement, AnyMind Group

1. Please share with us your background before joining AnyMind Group

Tatum: I graduated from Harvard in 2015 and began my career at a consulting firm. Subsequently, I transitioned to companies specializing in consumer goods, marketing, and e-commerce. My experience also includes roles in operations management, B2B and B2C sales, and corporate strategy.

2. What do you do in your job role, and how does it fit into the wider range of AnyMind Group’s business?

Tatum: I oversee the daily operations of Digital Distribusi Indonesia (DDI), a subsidiary of AnyMind Group. Additionally, after the acquisition by AnyMind Group of DDI this year, I now play a pivotal role in guiding other countries to replicate the successful business model of DDI, contributing to the expansion and growth of their e-commerce endeavors.

3. What is an often misunderstood aspect of your job role?

Tatum: One frequent misconception is that the job is easy, which often leads to surprise when people discover that DDI manages inventory. The misunderstanding primarily arises from a lack of awareness about the comprehensive scope of DDI’s responsibilities.

4. How has your time been at AnyMind so far? What are the things that stand out to you about the company?

Tatum: My time at AnyMind has been fantastic! The consistently friendly atmosphere from everyone has made it a great place to work. The company strikes a perfect balance between being fun and serious, much like the atmosphere at DDI. One standout aspect is the humility of Kosuke Sogo and Otohiko Kozutsumi, which makes them superb role models.

5. How is it like working as part of your local team (both DDI and AnyMind) and also as part of the wider regional unit? What are the unique quirks or habits of the team?

Tatum: The work structure has become more organized and aligned with international standards, which is excellent. It’s a new adjustment for DDI, and we’re still adapting to it. Overall, there’s a positive sentiment about being part of a global team. Interestingly, the DDI Stars (as we fondly call all employees in DDI) tend to be very quiet while working but transform into a lively and enthusiastic bunch during breaks and Townhalls. It’s quite a dynamic and fun contrast!

6. What are some key traits that you feel people in your role should have, and why?

Tatum: In my opinion, individuals in my role should possess agility, attention to detail, and openness. Agility is crucial because the business landscape undergoes rapid shifts, and quick adaptation is essential to stay ahead. Attention to detail is vital, especially when managing stocks and budgets, as meticulous monitoring is necessary to prevent financial losses. Openness is key because our team is relatively young, and maintaining an open mind is crucial in understanding how individuals prefer to work and contribute to the team.

7. What is that one favourite local food that you would like to introduce to readers? What are your hobbies and interests?

Tatum: Choosing just one is tough with so many delicious options, but if I had to pick, it would be Soto Betawi Haji Mamat. I recently had it, and it’s consistently exceptional! As for hobbies, I’ve recently resumed playing badminton after a 12-year hiatus, and I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my husband and our son. In terms of interests, I have a keen appreciation for aesthetically pleasing cars.
